‘COD WAR’ DISPUTE

Reykjavik talks again (N.Z.P.A.-Reutcr—Copyright) NEW YORK, Sept. 29. British and Icelandic officials will meet in Reykjavik next week to resume attempts to avert a “cod war” over fishing rights, a British spokesman at the U.N. has announced. The announcement comes after a 40-minute meeting in New York between the British Foreign Secretary (Sir Alec Douglas-Home) and his Icelandic counterpart (Mr Einar Agustsson). The spokesman said that Sir Alec Douglas-Home told Mr Agustsson that further harassment of British trawlers fishing inside Iceland’s new 50-mile limit would prejudice the prospects for the talks, and he asked him to ensure that they ceased. The Icelandic Minister undertook to pass on the message to his Cabinet colleagues. It is understood that the talks in Reykjavik will start on October 4, and that the two Ministers did not themselves engage in any negotiations on the dispute.
