School uniform material
Sir, —Being a good dressmaker, I intended to make my 5-year-old son his summer uniform for school, but find that the plain grey material is unobtainable. Apparently it is imported only for the manufacturers’ use. Not wanting to pay the price of a bought uniform, what do I do? —Yours, etc., HARD UP. Ashburton, September 22, 1972.
[The principal of Ashburton College (Mr R. O. McDowell) replies: “The problem of a uniform for a five-year-old does not really concern the college. However, I can sympathise with 'Hard Up’ as I understand that only sufficient material is imported for manufacturers’ use. Retail shops have little if no demand for the material and hence do not stock it. There are two immediate solutions available for any parents of Ashburton College pupils who may have the same problem. Some assistance can be given where there are genuine cases of hardship. Referrals have been made also to Heritage. The college has a second-hand clothing room organised by the P.T.A., and I am sure this could provide a solution.”]
