Demand up for timber

A rapidly increasing national and local demand for timber has had a noticeable effect on the Canterbury sawmilling industry, says the Joint managing director of McAlpines (Raneiora). Ltd. (Mr D. D. McAlpine). In spite of increased production. stocks of timber a* Southbrook are declining and are not expected to be maintained at much above onethird the previous level be-' cause of the increase in build-, ing.

“The increased availability of loan money for building has had such an impact that most of our timber has been sold before it is milled,” said Mr McAlpine. Production from the new mill which replaced the building destroyed by fire last vear. has alreadv reached target figures of more than 20,000 super feet a day for the second stage. The third stage will not be working until near the end of the year.
