Problem of old road markings
The Christchurch City Council is having difficulty finding suitable methods of erasing obsolete road markings on some road surfaces. Replying to a letter from the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee, the Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes) said that on smoothtextured road surfaces a road-line removal machine had proved satisfactory, but the machine was not effective on chip-sealed surfaces.
The committee had previously expressed concern about the danger to traffic of old road markings. If black paint was coated over the old lines, it showed as a line under wet conditions, Mr Hayes said. A thin coat of bituminous road-mix was suitable for specific purposes, but unsatisfactory for long, narrow, centre-line markings. "Various paint removers have been tried, but most are successful only on relatively new markings, although the council is now testing a new paint remover, which although expensive may prove to be the most successful,” Mr Hayes said.
