More oranges next week
New Zealand oranges will be auctioned at the Christchurch produce markets next week and these are expected to fill the gap left by the disappearance of Australian oranges. In the last week or two New Zealand oranges have been coming to the markets only in small shipments. A small consignment of Islands bananas will be available in shops on Monday and on Tuesday Ecuadorean bananas will be on sale.
This week the markets received the first shipment of the season of pineapples from Hawaii, which are retailing at $1 9c to $1 29c each. Seminole tangeloes, at 26c to 33c per lb, have also been popular. Lettuces and tomatoes are in good supply. Nelson lettuces are bringing up to 59c each and locally grown 19c to 35c. Tomatoes are bringing 48c to 78c per lb.
Other retail prices ‘are: cabbages, 23c to 29c: cauliflowers, 15c to 29c; spinach, 19c to 25c a bunch; silver beet. 19c to 23c a bunch; carrots, to 15c per lb; parsnips, to 16c a lb; onions, 4c to 6c per lb; pumpkins, 12c to 15c per lb; swedes. 6c to 8c per lb; leeks; 19c to 25c a bunch: spring oinons. 12c to 14c a bunch; radishes. 12c to 14c a bunch; rhubarb, 22c to 29c a bunch; and grapefruit, 25c to 34c per lb.
