The Rumour, now reduced to a duo, has reached the Golden Disc finals with its beautiful Studio One disc, “Holy Morning.” The song was written by one of New Zealand’s most popular song writers. Shade Smith, a former member of The Rumour. Shade has now left the group to concentrate on song writing and to pursue a solo career. Ross Hindman has also left to concentrate on his pharmaceutical career. Their departure has left Shade’s twin brother, Gerard, and Sjaaki Koolen, who will continue as a duo, in both the live and recording fields. The Auckland-based acous-

tic group first made an impact on the entertainment scene when it released its first single, “What have you done (With that day God gave you this morning).” At that stage The Rumour consisted of one girl and three men, but Colleen Ralph soon retired from the group and was replaced by Hindman, who played bass.

Hindman’s inclusion in the group meant that all four members had once played in a pop group together in the early 19605. They lived and played in Huntly, and were known as the Surfires.

As it gained more experience, The Rumour concentrated on original material. Shade’s talents as a songwriter contributed largely to the group’s success with

"L’Amour est L’Enfant de la Liberte,” and “No Money on our Trees.” Before Hindman and Shade Smith left, an album, “Land of New Vigour and Zeal,” was released. This L.P. will stand as a landmark in the turning point for New Zealand songwriters and artists. Like "L’Amour,” “Holy Morning” reached the final in the original songs section of Studio One. In this number, the group is supported by a 12 voice female choir. Although “Holy Morning” did not win the Studio One award, it must be among the favourites to take the Golden Disc title.
