Thefts alleged from union
(Neto Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 27. James Henry Hill, aged 52, a secretary, elected trial by jury on 11 charges of stealing cheque? worth a total of $9350.66 from the Workers’ Union when he appeared in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court today.
Hill was remanded on $lOOO bail, with a similar surety, for a week to allow a date to be set for the hearing of depositions.
Ten of the charges relate to cheques drawn on the A.N.Z. Bank, Ponsonby, for the sums of $5OO, $5OO, $55.66, $295, $4OO, $4OO, $2OOO, $2OOO, $BOO, and $BOO.
The cheques, drawn between June 22 last year and May 1 this year, are alleged to have been signed by Hill and a man whose name was suppressed by Mr J. B. Bergin, S.M. Mr R. L, McLaren, appearing for Hill, said the man whose name had been suppressed had appeared in court in Palmerston North on a charge of theft. The other cheque, drawn on the A.N.Z. Bank, Cashel Street, Christchurch, for $l6OO on April 5 last year, is alleged to have been signed by Hill and W. A. Dempster. The offences are alleged to have occurred in Auckland and Feilding.
Mr McLaren said the charges against Hill, and three other defendants, would eventually be heard together in Auckland.
