Rugby came before golf
There was an epilogue to the day's national golf drama at Waitikiri, when five players were called to the first tee to play off for two places in the amateur field. There should have been six: but M. R. Blank, of Christchurch, had gone to the Ranfurly Shield match and was an absentee. The others were J. G. Mackay, R. G. Wilson, W. L. Hill, B. R. Player and G. C. Stevenson. Mackay had also
gone to the football, having exchanged places in the field with J. F. Logie, but he got back to the course in time. And it was Mackay who scored first, holing a 25-foot putt for a birdie 3. And then there were four. None of them played the difficult second hole well. But Wilson holed a 20-footer for 4, Stevenson missed from 14 feet, and under mounting pressure, Hill failed from eight feet and Player from five feet.
