Heart clinic case

IN.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 27. Auckland cardiologists are considering research which may affect the case for extra heart clinics in the South Island. Dr K. O’Brien, secretary of the scientific committee of the National Heart Foundation and an Auckland cardiologist, said today that research was proposed into bypass graft operations. If it were proved that the operation increased life expectancy of coronary sufferers, the work load on Wellington’s clinic would be greatly increased. Dr O’Bnen said that Auckland h ospitals had performed more than 100 such operations for relieving angina (coronary chest pain). There was now a debate as to how widely the operation should be applied. But even if research indicated that more of these operations should be carried out. Dr O’Brien said he doubted the need for a second heart unit in the South Island.
