Basketball captain’s 84 games
The captain of the Canterbury men’s basketball team in the season recently completed, T. Guthrie, can claim to be the most experienced provincial player in Canterbury. He has now represented Canterbury in 84 games since his debut in 1968 and has a grand total of 582 points to his credit.
However, he is still well short of the record for appearances for Canterbury. The former Canterbury forward, A, R. Hounsell, exceeded a century of games before being transferred to Hutt Valley.
There is some doubt whether Gutries will have the opportunity of breaking Hounsell’s record for he is expecting to be transferred from Christchurch before the start of next season.
Close behind Guthrie in games played is the 6ft 7in New Zealand centre, R.
Millard. He has played 82 games and scored 678 points. Third in the list of current players is K. Luxton with 54 games and 239 points. S. Ferguson, who has played 43 games and scored 345 points, is fourth on the list and B. Shipley, with 29 games and 190 points, completes the top five. The highest scoring average for Canterbury is 13.1 points a game, held by the 1971 New Zealand representative, J. R. Fairweather. The season just completed was his first full one for Canterbury. He has played only 28 games but has compiled 368 points. The team's selectorcoach, Mr G. D. Dempsey, has also carved himself a formidable record. He has now coached Canterbury in 107 games for more than 80 wins.
