McRae wins series
GX.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) RIVERSIDE (California). The New Zealand racing driver. G. Mcßae, made sure of the Continental Formula 5000 series at the Riverside international raceway. Mcßae finished third in two heats, assuring him of the championship in the eight-race series. Mcßae's nearest competitor in the point-standings going into the latest event, B. Lunger, was knocked out of the first heat in a multiple-car accident on the sixth turn of the first lap. A car driven by G. Follmer spun out in front of Lunger, and another car driven by R. West climber over Lunger's vehicle. Lunger was not injured, although West's car left a tyre mark on his helmet. Lunger trailed Mcßae by 18 points, and his only chance for the championship was to finish first with Mcßae placing no higher than seventh. B. Redman, of England, won both heats of the eighth race for $17,800 in prize money. He averaged 116.737 miles an hour for 76 laps over the 2.55-mile circuit.
Golf.—G. Jones (Kansas) beat D. Marad (Massachusetts) in a sudden-death play-off to win the SI 00.000 Robinson golf tournament. J Colbert (Missouri) was third.
