FIGHT AT HOTEL

Ifopo makes pro. debut

Robert Ifopo, a hardpunching fighter not noted for his sweet temper, will have his first professional bout when he meets Bolbino Va’ afusuaga in a middle-weight contest at the Aranui Motor Lodge Hotel this evening. Ifopo, a bearded Samoan who lives in Christchurch, will be having his first bout in the city. As an amateur he fought in Greymouth and Nelson before he was suspended by the New Zealand Boxing Council after an incident involving his opponent and officials in Nelson.

Va’afusuaga, a Fijian boxer based in Wellington, will have his third professional bout. He was outpointed by the promising Hastings light heavy-weight, N. Aitken, and won a split decision against L. Takuma.

Ifopo was unpredictable as an amateur, when he fought under the name of Muu, but delighted the crowd on the West Coast. He has a heavy right hand punch and will be going for a knock-out. The bout is scheduled for eight twc-minute rounds. There will be several amateur preliminary bouts, and spectators, as guests of the Canterbury Boxing Association at the hotel, will be served drinks during intervals, and after the fighting.
