Century win to Counties XV
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKAND.
Counties make a habit of mammoth scoring in Rugby, but they outdid themselves at Pukekohe stadium yesterday when they defeated East Coast, 101-7, in a representative match.
It is the first time in a first-class match in New Zealand that a team has reached a century of points.
The full-back, J. L. Graham, broke the record for the most points scored in one match when he kicked 14 conver-
sions and three penalty goals for a total of 37 points. The previous record was established by G. Wallis last season when he scored 31 points for Wellington against Wai-rarapa-Bush.
Counties scored 16 tries yesterday—the same number they scored against East Coast at Tokomaru Bay in 1968 when Counties won, 72-8.
The wing, P. Goldsmith (as a Gisborne product he hails from the East Coast neighbourhood) and the No. 8, B. Shirkey, each scored four tries. G. Taylor, K. H. Macmillan, and R. N. Lendrum scored two tries each, and one each were scored by J. Hughes and R. Clarke. HANDLING LAPSES Counties might have scored more tries but for handling lapses and players holding on to the ball too long. East Coast was outclassed, but its efforts never waned, and it did not give the appearance of a team which was being thrashed.
