Police protection for Rugby tour
Sir, —It is idle for the Prime Minister to declare it is premature for Cabinet to consider the cost of maintaining law and order if a South African Rugby team tours New Zealand next year. Most police (and policemen’s wives) know a report exists that assesses extra police costs will top a million dollars in overtime, transport and accommodatior and suggests that leave for all police will be prohibited for probably three months. If 55
police are needed to keep casual “bikies” in order at Alexandra blossom festival, (as reported in “The Press,” on September 2) it isn’t hard to visualise the enormity. of the police effort required to thwart the thousands resolutely determined to demonstrate against apartheid. —■ Yours, etc., CABTA. Sept. 5, 1972. [Police sources have indicated that a contingency study has been carried out on the added duties, total manpower and possible extra overtime required. It is denied that there is anything unusual in this. The Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) said that he had not seen such a report. He added: “Many assumptions would have to be made before any sort of an estimate of cost could be arrived at.” —- Ed., “The Press.”]
