Open hearings urged

CN.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Sept. 20.

New Zealand should open the proceedings of Parliamentary Select Committees to the news media, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr Watt) said today.

Mr Watt, who has just returned from representing the New Zealand Parliament at a seminar on parliamentary administration at Canberra, said that under the Australian system of Government, Select Committees were open to the news media and the public. The opinion expressed at the seminar was that open committee discussions gave a far greater opportunity for legislation to be considered more thoroughly by the committee.
