Not enough cargo

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Sept. 20

The 24,800-ton container ship ACT 1 will not call at Auckland this week-end as planned to inaugurate the New Zealand-Europe container service, because there is not sufficient cargo. The ship was to have loaded 120 containers at Auckland but because of a freezing workers’ dispute over packing containers, about 40 containers have been cancelled, according to Associated Container Transportation's New Zealand manager (Mr R. C. Whyte). About 80 containers that had already been stacked at the Auckland terminal are being railed to Wellington for loading.

Freezing workers have been pressing for extra payment as they say the new system of loading into containers and not rail-waggons reduces the amount of overtime wages they can earn.
