Hopes for quinella at Ashburton
It was hoped that provision for qulnella and forecast betting would be made early in the new season, Mr A. M. Bruce, president of the Ashburton Trotting Club, said when presenting bls report ot the annual meeting on Thursday evening. Mr Bruce said the cost of administration of the Racing Authority, which trotting had come under this year, might have an adverse effect on stakes. Mr Bruce said that although the 12 new permits to trotting, recommended by the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Racing, would be totally inadequate to meet the demand he could only hope they would go to where the need was greatest—to the areas where there were the
largest number of maiden horses.
“Financially the year under review had been profitable,*’ said Mr Bruce. “After providing $4135 for depreciation the club made a profit of $1563. The on-course totalisator turnover of $614,682 was up $90,479 on the previous year and the off-course total rose by $84,898.50 to $720,411.50." Stakes, at $64,000, were up $6OOO on the previous year. Other major items of expenditure were: Race meeting expenses, $10,826; salaries and wages, $8941; maintenance, $6313; and printing, advertising and stationery, $6120. Totalisator receipts amounted to $190,772 and nominations, acceptances and forfeits brought in $l6/216. Gate receipts amounted to $8302 and interest and dividends on investments were worth $7910. After including the profit for the year the club’s accumulated funds at June 30 amounted te $179,701.
