RUGBY At Nelson.—Southland beat Marlborough, 24-0, to win the South Island under-16 Rugby tournament yesterday. Both teams had previously been unbeaten. Other results: Canterbury 27, Nelson 7 (for third place); Southland 42, Canterbury sub-unions 0; Nelson-Bay 19. West Coast 12; Buller 15, Mid-Canter-bury 7; North Otago 30, Otago 4; Marlborough 19, South Canterbury 18. At Wanganui.—Hawke’s Bay went through the central region under 16 tournament with a clear record, beating Walrarapa Bush, 10-3, in the final. Other results: Horowhenua 14, Wellington 4; Manawatu 29, East Coast 10; Wanganui 14. Poverty Bay 20. At Hamilton.—Waikato A and Taranaki won through to the final of the northern region under 16 tournament being unbeaten in their respective sections. Yesterday, Waikato beat North Auckland, 16-9, and Taranaki beat King Country, 16-10. Other results: Bay of Plenty 18, Waikato B 3; Auckland 42. Counties 9. SOCCER At Wellington: Westlake (Auckland) won the secondary schools national soccer tournament yesterday. It beat the invited Wellington club team, Hungarla, 3-1 in the final. At Tauranga.—Cashmere had to be content with third equal place In the secondary schools’ soccer tournament which ended yesterday. Tauranga Boys’ College had victory well In hand before the final round, but Auckland Grammar, Rotorua and Cashmere were all in the running for second place. In one of the most keenly contested matches of the tournament, Cashmere drew with Rotorua, 1-1, B. Boland scoring Cashmere’s goal. Auckland Grammar romped home, 11-1. against Taupo College, and Tauranga also won

easily, beating Mt Rosklll Grammar, 8-0. At Nelson.—Eight Canterbury boys from the 11 who took part in the South Island under 12 soccer championship, which the province won, were chosen for the tournament team. They were: M. Stewart. K. Field, J. Margaretis, G. Fraser, P. Beedies (captain), A. Crowther, E. Hanton, G. Archer.

At Rotorua.—Auckland and Hutt Valley became joint holders of the North Island under 12 title when they drew. 1-1, In the final.
