Call for regional development policy
The Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association wants to know when the Government will announce its policy to encourage regional development, said the director of the association (Mr I. D. Howell) yesterday.
He was commenting on a statement by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Taiboys) that the Government was examining ways of encouraging regional development. “Manufacturers welcome the statement, but regional development is something which has been advocated for 10 years, and the longer it is left the more difficult the situation will become,” Mr Howell said. South Island industries, and industries in some parts of the North Island, had major'
problems about transport costs to the Auckland market. In some instances transport costs had doubled in the last year. However, the main purpose of regional development was to achieve balanced economic growth in New Zealand, said Mr Howell. At the same time as helping industries in the South Island and the lower half of the North Island, balanced economic growth would also be of considerable benefit to Auckland industries by easing the considerable pressures being faced by industrial firms in Auckland.
