CHICAGO MEETING

Daley and McGovern (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) CHICAGO, August 23. The Democratic Presidential candidate, Senator George McGovern, seemingly made peace with Chicago’s Mayor, Mr Richard Daley, today in a meeting with the powerful Democratic boss who again pledged his organisation would work for the entire Democratic ticket in the November Presidential election.

The senator had lunch and an hour’s private discussion with the Mayor, a necessary ally if he is to win the key state of Illinois in the election. Senator McGovern said that he was confident he had Mr Daley’s complete support despite the unseating by proMcGovem forces of the Mayor and his bloc of regular Democrats at the party convention in Miami Beach five weeks ago. It was the first meeting between the two men since the senator won the nomination and he came to Chicago in an effort to mend his fences with Mr Daley and get assurances of all-out support from his machine which he must have to stand any chance of victory in Illinois. Before the meeting with Mr Daley, Senator McGovern addressed the annual meeting of the American Legion, most of whose members have bitterly opposed his anti-war stand and his proposal to slash the defence budget. He received a chilly reception and his speech produced brief and perfunctory applause. A few delegates left the hall before he ended his speech. Defending his pledge to cut the defence budget. Senator McGovern assured the Legionnaires that “so long as I am President, America will never become a second-rate Power. “We are and will remain the strong nation in the world.”
