Bus driver fined
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, Aug. 24. An Auckland tour bus driver, Casper Adolf Rusch, has been convicted and fined $25 on a charge of carelessly using a motor bus on State Highway 6 near Haast on January 7. The reserved decision was announced by Mr H. J. Evans, S.M., in Hokitika today. The charge was a sequel to an accident near Solitude Creek, 18 miles east of Haast, when the bus driven by the defendant pulled wide to avoid a grader working on the road and toppled down a bank. Six passengers were injured, one of them seriously. Sergeant J. W. Sawers prosecuted for the police when prosecution evidence was heard in Hokitika on April 11, and Mr G. O. Johnston appeared for the defendant.
The evidence of the defendant and one of his two witnesses was taken before a deputy registrar at Auckland on June 22. When the case came before the Magistrate in Hokitika on August 15 Mr Johnston made submissions on the evidence.
The Magistrate said the defendant was a man of considerable driving experience, and had had an unblemished record. A period of disqualification would be unnecessary.
