Emergency in Chile

(N.Z.P, A.-Reuter —Copyright) SANTIAGO, Aug. 23. A senior Chilean Army officer. General Hector Bravo Munoz, has assumed charge of the capital and surrounding areas under the terms of a state of emergency decreed by the Government last night, after street clashes between the police and opponents of the country’s Marxist leader, President Allende. The Ministry of the Interior said tonight that 159 people were arrested during the clashes that occurred after a Government order to striking shopkeepers to reopen their premises for business, or be forced to do so. The city was quiet today, but the powerful Opposition (Christian Democrats) called a mass march on August 30, to protest against shortages of food supplies and recent substantial price increases ordered by the Government. The shopkeepers’ strike was a similar protest.
