School-cadet camp

Two hundred and fortytwo boys from schools throughout the South Island are at present attending school-cadet training courses at Burnham Military Camp. The schools represented are Waitaki Boys’, Bayfield, and Otago Boy’s high schools, and John McGlashan, Christ’s, Ashburton, St Andrew’s, Nelson, and Marlborough colleges. Two courses are in progress. A junior course is attended by 172 cadets and a senior course by 70. Both courses cover basic military training, leadership, and map reading. The junior course has added first aid and live shooting, while the seniors learn bushcraft, survival training, river crossing and flotation techniques. On Sunday afternoon the cadets will have a marchingout parade at which the commander of the Christchurch Army Area (Lieu-tenant-Colonel W. B. F. McAllum) will take the review. He will also make presentations to the best cadet on both courses. The parade will be attended by parents and friends of those attending the camp.
