MINI-COMPUTER CAN EXPAND

Inflation and its consequent pressure on funds has resulted in an even closer evaluation of capital expenditure by most business houses. Whereas the tendency in the past has certainly been to allow for short-term growth when considering the purchase of office equipment, the accountant and purchasing officer is today looking further ahead and demanding far more mileage. Intended to match this growing demand for flexibility and expandability of capabilities is a new desksized equipment line introduced to the New Zealand market this month by NCR. In size and mode of operation, the NCR 399 minicomputer is designed for efficiency and growth. It bridges an important gap by combining the simplicity of an accounting machine with the speed, computational and decision-making abilities of a computer. Key to its growth ability is the consideration paid to modular design. Briefly, business houses need only purchase the basic unit and as their businesses grow, select peripherals which exactly cater for increasing volumes. Throughput may be further enhanced by utilisation of a “right rear

eject” option, an important time-saving feature for trial balances and other accounting applications. Ledgers are fed into the front, data is read at high speed from the magnetic stripes, and the ledgers then stacked behind the machine in their original sequence.
