Games effort urged
In view of his long association with the Commonwealth Games, he would be "less than human” if he was not disappointed that the 1974 Games were not to be held at Porritt Park, said the GovernorGeneral (Sir Arthur Porritt) at a civic farewell last evening. However, he said, the chosen venue for the Games — Queen Elizabeth II Park — bore a name which had "instant appeal” "I have seen this comElex today, and I think you ave reason to congratulate yourselves on a firstclass concept,” he said.
There had been some conflicts of opinion about the Games venue, he said, but now people should make a concerted effort to make the Games a success. "Christchurch carries this responsibility on behalf of the whole of New Zealand,” he said. He was sure Christchurch’s efforts would ensure the continuity of the Games, and the richness of their purpose. Furflier, he said, In 25 years as Commonwealth Games Federation chairman he knew of no city which had lost money through holding the Games. Nor was money the only benefit Sir Arthur Porritt was
shown through the new Town Hall yesterday afternoon, and his conunent afterwards was: “Impressive, attractive, and highly functional.” Sir Arthur Porrlttt, who laid the building’s foundation stone early in his fiveyear term as GovernorGeneral, told guests at his Christchurch civic farewell last evening that the Town Hall was a magnificent building, and an entirely worthy civic centre for the city. “It is the best of its kind in this country, and in a great many others as well,” e said. “My congratulations to the architects and the contractors.”
