Honeymoon at sea for Belgian girl

A vivacious Belgian brunette, Mrs Monique Devrome, arrived at Lyttelton yesterday on her honeymoon aboard the Belgian Fruit Lines' 5060-ton refrigerated motor-vessel Frubel Europa. She married her husband, Mr Jaques Devrome, the ship's third engineer, at Ostende in April.

A month after her wedding, Mrs Devrome joined the Frubel Europa in Sweden. She has since visited Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Ecuador and now New Zealand. Before that she had spent holidays m Spain, France or Switzerland. Mrs Devrome, aged 22, who speaks four languages (French, Dutch, German and English), met her husband at a dance in Ostende. Aboard ship she normally speaks Dutch, as do most folk from her part of Belgium. Others speak French. At school she was taught in Dutch, she said yesterday. After six months aboard the ship, Mrs Devrome will have to go ashore. She and her husband will have their home at Westende.

The Frubel Europa is loading 800 tons of carcase and cartoned meat and lamb for Japan. It is the ship’s first visit to Lyttelton. The black, yellow and red ensign of Belgium is a rare sight at Lyttelton, as is the visit of a Belgian ship. The visit of a Belgian girl is even more rare and yesterday afternoon, on the waterfront, many a waterfront worker paused to glance at both with interest. The company has six refrigerated vessels engaged mainly on the Ecuador-Belgium run, but the Frubel Europa, now under charter to J. Lauritzen and Company, Ltd (Danish), is well off the beaten track. Captain W. K Bracke, of Ghent, is in command of the 19knot vessel. The crew are mostly Belgian, but there are two officers from the Philippines, a Congolese engineer and a Spaniard or two. Officers and seamen were just as scarce in Belgium as elsewhere, an officer said. The Frubel Europa is expected to sail for Auckland tomorrow. ARRIVALS Wanaka (6.28 a.m.), 2769, Capt R. H.
