Newcomers add interest to table tennis

The appearance of one of Auckland's leading juniors, K. M. Palmer, and the top South Island woman, Miss Y. M. Fogarty, Instilled fresh interest in the fourteenth round of the senior table tennis competition last evening. Both players have come for the national championships which begin at Cowles Stadium on Monday. Palmer substituted for G. J. Rhlnd in the Avonside II team, but unfortunately found himself playing against the formidable Avonside I trio, B. T. Cross, M. W. Burrowes and M. R. Spinks. The visitor demonstrated his ability to exchange rapid crosstable shots on either hand, but lacked a “killing” smash and was a little uncertain when reaching for the ball away from his body. He lost his three singles, but forced the local players to display their best form. Miss Fogarty helped University to retain Its second placing In the competition by scoring two victories—her win against R. W. R. Mercer was a notable one.

However, the honours of this fixture rested with A. Alabaster (Riccarton I), who defeated Miss Fogarty in three sets and ended Yee Chow Bol’s unbeaten singles sequence of 24. Alabaster proved too steady with his chop and push shots. Without J. Armstrong, Riccarton II lost its match against Dalllngton. Although W. D. Adamson kept Riccarton in the fight until the final match, the experienced Dalllngton pair, R. G. Hart and D. J. Kalin, clinched victory by combining successfully in the final doubles. Avonside HI, a team which has gone close several times but never quite succeeded, finally recorded its first victory this season at the expense of the club’s fourth team. All members of

Avonside 111 met with some success, J. W. Yates’s win against G. C. Main being hla first for 14 games.
