Trees

Sir,—l wonder how many of our city planners read the article by John Oakley in your issue of Saturday last. All citizens should take note of his wise counsel. Mr Oakley could also have referred to the proposed destruction of the mountain ribbonwood (Plagianthus betulinus) on the south side of the Cathedral. This fine specimen, probably the best in New Zealand, was where it now grows before the Cathedral was built. It is a crime that such a historic tree should be sacrificed for a few feet of road.—Yours, etc., S. W. COX. August 22, 1972.
