Alert at airport

Fire engines, ambulances and police cars turned out to a full alert at Christchurch Airport last evening after an American Starlifter aircraft developed rudder trouble over the Tasman Sea. The aircraft, which had 22 persons aboard, landed without incident at 9.35 p.m., about half an hour late. It developed the trouble half-way between Richmond, north of Sydney, where it had taken off, and Christchurch. When the fault was noticed, Captain L. E. Hancock, declared an emergency and the airport was placed on stand-by alert for the United States Military Airlift Command aircraft.

The big plane was on a flight taking United States servicemen from Australia to the United States. The landing at Christchurch was scheduled to land and pick up passengers. It was to have been on the ground only two hours, but will probably not leave Christchurch until Wednesday.
