Fires in Russia

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) MOSCOW. Aug. 21. Fire-fighters tackling widespread peatland and forest fires near Moscow and Yaroslavl, north of the capital, today hoped longrange weather forecasters were right in promising rain this week. So far the weather has been against them. Russia’s long hot summer this year—one of the hottest on record —has made peat bogs tinder dry. As the capital felt the effects of the outbreak yet again yesterday, in the form of throat-tickling smoke clouds, it was disclosed that a state of emergency was in force in Yaroslavl, a medieval city with more than 500,000 inhabitants. A fire official there said that 5000 workers and soldiers were in action against fires over 400 acres of nearby countryside. There had been no casualties and the outbreak was under control, he said.

Fire-fighters there were battling to protect yet another victim of the hot weather—this year’s harvest now being gathered by Yaroslavl farmers.
