Churches bombed
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) HANOI, Aug. 21. American bombing of North Vietnam has not spared religious buildings, Agence France Presse reports. Churches, pagodas, seminaries, convents and even a cathedral have all suffered varying degrees of bomb damage. Only a stone’s throw from the centre of Hanoi, two old pagodas, smothered in luxuriant vegetation, were hit in a recent raid on the capital’s suburbs.
This week-end, press correspondents were invited on an inspection tour of Ninh Binh province, a region with strong Roman Catholic traditions, liberally sprinkled with churches.
In particular, a huge religious complex has grown up at Phat Diem, where a large cathedral, a dozen churches and chapels and several other religious buildings are clustered on a 30-acre site. Despite being highly visible from far away, this religious enclave has been bombed twice in the space of three weeks.
