Admissions to home rise

A total of 115 children were admitted to the South Island Methodist Children’s Home this year compared with 53 last year. The Rev. O. T. Woodfield, secretary of the home’s board, told the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Methodist District Synod on Saturday that more children were being left at the home on a short-term basis than before.

This resulted from family difficulties and from mothers’ illnesses. The increase could also partly be attributed to the homes being recently improved, and to the introduction of a more personal system of child care. The home was not becoming over-crowded, as admissions were balanced by the number of children returning to their families, Mr Woodfield said.
