WOMEN’S HOCKEY Burnside takes title

Burnside recovered from its setback of the previous week to beat Cranmer and thus win the senior women’s hockey competition on Saturday.

The demands of representative games weakened all teams and the play was not up to its usual standard. Results:

Burnside 4, Cranmer 2; Carlton 1. Harewood 1; University 3, Rawhiti 0; Aranui 2, Digbys 1. Final points: Burnside 11, Carlton 9, Harewood 7J, Rawhiti 7-L University 6L Cranmer si, Aranui 51, Digbys 3. Burnside v. Cranmer In an extremely fast game Burnside’s great experience gave it victory over a determined Cranmer team. For Burnside, A. Johnson on the right wing, made many dangerous runs and passed constructively. J. Phillips (centreforward) and A. Alleway the inside-left were a constant threat with their mid-field thrusts and they were quick to capitalise on chances in the circle. The righthalf, K. Blyth, made many good interceptions and her covering on defence was invaluable. S. Comer directed play w’ell from centre-half. The Cranmer forwards combined well in mid-field play, but they lacked the experience to finish off movements in the circle. A. Liddell, at right-half, played soundly, and the goal-keeper made a number of fine saves. Carlton v. Harewood At the end of the first half. Harewood had a deserved 1-0 lead as a result of its superior combination. This was particularly noticeable on its right flank where S. Howells and J. Fookes combined most effectively to produce much of Harewood’s thrust.

In the second half, Harewood’s forwards tended to indulge in too much solo dribbling which nullified their attacks. M. Rankin, the left half, and her back B. Turbott, were solid on defence, and S. Carroll made a number of good saves in goal. Carlton, although it shared territorial honours in the first half, appeared to lack combination in its forward line and much of the attack was launched through solo breaks. There was a little improvement in this aspect of play in the second half. B. Tilden, in goal, made some fine saves, and P. Barwick, at centre-half, was Carlton’s best player, intercepting well and passing constructively. University v. Rawhiti

Although Rawhiti was seriously weakened by the absence of four players, University gave

one of its better performances, and only lack of finish in the circle prevented its score from being higher. The inside right. K. MacDonald, trapped soundly and her thoughtful passing created many openings for her forwards, who combined most effectively. S. Borren and A. Thompson were the pick of the defence.

Rawhiti fought back well, but its rearranged team was unequal to the task and it was unable to maintain possession sufficiently to pose any real threat. J. Millard, at inside right, played constructively, but she lacked support, although K. Jamin, at right half, backed up well. Aranui v. Digby’s This was a very scrappy game which rarely reached senior standard. Poor trapping and passing, and lack of anticipation resulted in much indeterminate Play. Aranui owed its victory to slightly better trapping than its opponents. A. Ruston, at centre half, and W. Stock (left half) were Aranui’s most consistent players, while S. Cowles posed a threat with her solo breaks. For Digby's, J. Hart made some good saves in goal. D. McKin-J nell, at left back, was Digby's best player, intercepting well and initiating attacks which then generally broke down because of poor trapping. 1
