POLYNESIAN FESTIVALS

A Polynesian festival may be held in Christchurch in conjunction with the Commonwealth Games in 1974. according to the chairman of the festival committee, the Rev. K. Ihaka, of Auckland. The first New Zealand Polynesian festival — in Rotorua earlier this year — had been successful and it was planned to hold another at Arawa Park, Rotorua, in March next year, said Mr Ihaka yesterday. Next year’s festival will have increased participation by Pacific Island groups, and there will be nine districts each eligible to have two Maori teams competing because there is a new district Maori council in Wellington.
