Discrimination alleged

The National Organisation for Women intends to ask the Government to amend the owner-biased voting provisions of the Counties Act. It feels that the present system discriminates in practice against women voters in county areas, says a statement from Mrs Lilian Rice, of the Christchurch branch of N.O.W. “N.O.W. considers it both urgent and imperative that a one-person, one-vote system be introduced for county voting as in a General Election,” the statement said. “For some years, a number of county councils have unsuccessfully asked the Counties Association to alter this system.” Most men go no the county electoral roll automatical!}' with a ratepayer's three votes. Most women have to apply for the residential one vote, says the statement.
