Waikare to load cargo for Fiji
The Union Steam Ship Com. par.y's Waikare, which is discharging general cargo from Adelaide, Port Pirie, and Melbourne at Lyttelton, will load Lyttelton and Auckland produce for Fiji. The 3839-ton WaiRare, built in Glasgow nearly 14 years ago, has 460,245 cu. ft of refrigerated cargo space in addition to her general cargo space.
Three years ago, the Union company had the vessel’s refrigerated space increased to the present size by Sinclair Melbourne and Company, Ltd, at Lyttelton.
The Waikare has played a big part in taking valuable deepfrozen New Zealand produce to Australia, besides carrying conventional cargo both ways, She has also made occasional trips to the Pacific Islands. W’hen she has finished discharging she will load potatoes, onions, and peas, besides refrigerated and general cargo. This will be discharged at Lautoka and Suva.
After discharging the balance of her Australian cargo at Auckland, she will complete loading there. Because of a recent labour shortage at Lyttelton, it is unlikely that she will leave for Auckland until early next week. The Waikare is said to be a happy shop. Captain J. Stoddart, who left the ship at Lyttelton to take his annual leave, has been master for several years. Seamen like the Waikare and stay for long periods.
Bulk carriers find Lyttelton’s deep water facilities, good transport, and clearance opportunities, ideal for bulk cargoes. Yesterday at Lyttelton, the Norwegian bulk carrier, Venabu, was discharging Ocean Island phosphate; the Antaios (Greek), was com pleting loading export coke for Venezuela; and the British bulk carrier Baron Forbes bad just arrived in port.
Paying her first visit to Lyttelton, the Baron Forbes brought bulk potash, diamonium phosphate and ammonium phosphate from Vancouver. Today, another Norwegian bulk carrier, the Bulk Explorer, is due also from Vancouver with bulk sulphur. A Japanese carrier, the Kashima Maru, will bring more phosphate —this time from Nauru next week-end.
Captain D. S. Gordon, master of the Baron Forbes, said yesterday that many men from liner companies, drawn from passenger vessels and cargo liners, were joining bulk carriers because of the excellent pay, accommodation and leave conditions.
The roll-on inter-island vessel, Holmlea. did not leave Lyttelton until 3.15 a.m. yesterday, instead of her normal time on Monday afternoon. Contaminated fuel was Dumped into the vessel’s tanks at Lyttelton by mistake, while she was bunkering, and this had to be removed.
