Accountants graduate
With an annual turnover of s26m and 1600 employees, the Christchurch City Council —one of Christchurch’s major employers—was aware of the vital role of the accountant, the Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering) said last evening at a graduation ceremony held by the Canterbury branch of the Society of Accountants. The chairman of the Canterbury branch of the society (Mr P. M. Hargreaves) said the university played an important part in th widening field of accountancy. Training was much more extensive than formerly. The president of the New Zealand Society of Accountants (Mr M. D. Gillick) said that the society, with more than 9000 members (2000 of whom were in public practice), was the largest professional body in New Zealand. The society was a complex organisation which relied on the voluntary work of its members; its normal running costs amounted to more than $140,000 a year, he said.
Most of the new members would be at the peak of their careers in the year 2000. Their work would be involved with figures to a relatively minor degree—they would mostly be concerned with people and communications, Mr Gillick said. Membership certificates and examination prizes were presented to the following.— New members: Messrs I. J. Bell, R. J. Chisholm, P. G. Crowhen, A. J. Dalton, A. F. Davidson, J. P. G. Egden, D. B. Herman, R. P. Hughes, K. J. Jellie, W. L. McClintock, J. P. B. Martin, P. Nicolle, R. J. Preston, T. J. Shapland, D. A. Young, and Mrs J. B. Steven. Examination prize-winners: Dr S. M. Lojkine (accounting stage one, University of Canterbury), Mr M. G. Carter (Accounting stage two), Mr A. J. Head (accounting stage three).
