Postal centre

Sir,—lf the postal centre is built on the proposed Hereford Street site the people of Christchurch might leave the Government Life Building in peace for a while. Everything is relative! It is true that we have waited a long time for a new postal centre, and that delays are undesirable, but is it not equally true that we shall have to live with any results a good deal longer? Mr Walker has not answered the criticisms made of the proposed site. Nor has he given alternative sites proper consideration. The proposed site in Hereford Street would completely destroy the serenity of the precinct west of the Avon. It would require that the library be moved from its existing ideal position, and it would shut the sun off forever from Hereford Street, an important access route to the university buildings. Let the citizens express their support for the City Council’s opposition to the proposed site now.—Yours, etc., ALISDAIR HUTCHISON. July 24, 1972.
