Fund-raising telescopes

Viewing telescopes will be erected in the grounds of the Hermitage and other hotels to raise money for the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind. The Tourist Hotel Corporation has approved the installation of coin-operated telescopes at Waitangi, the Chateau. the Hermitage, Wanaka, Franz Josef, Te Anau and Milford Sound hotels. Each will bear the inscription. “Enjoy the gift of your sight and remember those who cannot. This telescope has been installed by the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind in co-oper-ation with (the sponsor) for the benefit of the blind people of New Zealand and the pleasure of the visiting public.”

Promises of sponsorship have been made to the Foundation for the Blind by oil companies and breweries. Mobil Oil New Zealand, Ltd, is to sponsor telescopes at the Hermitage, and Dominion Breweries the one at the Rutherford, a new hotel in Nelson.
