MORE SERUM HEPATITIS
Total increases to 13
Three cases of senam hepatitis contracted through drug abuse were reported in the Christchurch health district last week. Two of those affected are in hospital. A fourth case was reported, but the cause has not yet been established.
Serum hepatitis was made a notifiable disease last November and the first case was reported in Christchurch in May I. Since then there have been 13 cases attributed to the use of dirty syringe needles in illicit drug practices, one case the cause of which has not yet been deter mined, and one case which, although reported as serum hepatitis, is now believed to be another complaint. The ages in all of the drugabuse cases range between 17 and 23, and all but two of the persons are male. Also reported last week were three cases of hookworm (all involving soldiers returned from overseas), two cases of infective hepatitis, and one case of pulmonary tuberculosis.
