Renoir for Auckland

The Auckland City Art Gallery has bought an Auguste Renoir lithograph for $6OOO. The lithograph, which is in 11 colours, is entitled, “Le Chapeau Epingle (Pinning the Hat).” The gallery already has one small minor work of the famous French Impressionist, and the purchase is regarded as a major acquisition.

It is 24in by 19|in, is signed in pencil, and dated 1898. It shows Berthe Morisot’s daughter pinning on her cousin’s hat.

The Deputy Mayor (Cr H. L. Ferguson), who is chairman of the council’s social welfare and cultural activities committee, said it was the most important purchase that bad yet been made for the gallery’s print collection. “Lithographs by Renoir are greatly sought on the international market, and we were fortunate in having the good offices of Wildenstein Gallery, London, to assist us in making the purchase from Australia,” he said.
