BRIGHTON STAKES
Up in most events Stakes have been increased from $lOO to $250 a race for almost all events at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting to be run on September 2 and 16. The club has made provision for four races at the first meeting and three at the second to be run under divided handicap conditions similar to those which apply for the Metropolitan club’s national meeting next month. The stake for the A. E. Laing Handicap, an invitation event on September 2, has been increased by $250 to $3500, and stakes for | all of the other events have been increased by $lOO. The race for 2min 19sec class . pacers has been replaced by a i maiden event carrying a stake! of $lOOO. Elimination heats for this event will be run on August 22. A $5 sweepstake will be! run on each heat, of which the winner will receive 70 per cent, I the second place-getters will re-1 ceive 20 per cent, and the third horses 10 per cent. The O. Hutchinson Handicap, the main race on the second! night, has also had its stake i raised by $250 to $3OOO. as has the Ordeal Cup, the feature race for trotters the same night. The 2min 19sec class Avon Handicap with a stake of $llOO will replace the maiden event on the programme. All other races, with the exception of the | New Brighton Stakes, for three-year-olds, which remains at $l6OO. have had their stakes raised by $lOO.
