‘Leave vehicles at home’
The deputy chairman of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr H. E. Denton) suggested yesterday that the business people of Christchurch should get together and decide to leave their vehicles at home on at least one day a week.
Mr Denton said that they would be serving their own interests by doing this in as much as they would be easing the parking problem in the inner city area.
Mr Denton was commenting at a meeting of the board on a report by Mr T. B. G. Armitage, of Christchurch, entitled “Traffic in Christchurch—a plan for the environment.” Mr Denton said that the slow decentralisation now taking place in Christchurch was a warning to business houses of things to come. If the steep incline in the number of cars coming into the city continued, the centre of Christchurch would become administrative only. On the recommendation of the works and traffic committee, the board decided that although there were points in Mr Armitage’s report with which it could agree, it wanted to reserve decision on them until any revisions or amendments to the existing Master Transportation Plan had been received. The board also decided to approve the first review of the Rkxarton Borough Council district scheme subject to the general manager obtaining clarification of matters relating to the erection of shelters.
