Week-end club cycling

A race record, and one which will probably stand some time, was set in cycling on Saturday. The Kaiapoi junior team wen the Becks Shield for novices in a time of 12min 32SOC—43sec better than the winning time last year. The winning team was D. J. Taylor, P. H. Taylor, M. B. Bruce, and K. P. Basher, and as they are among the leading riders In open events, the margin of their win was not unexpected. The senior event was also won by Kalapol, but in a time nearly a minute slower that last year’s winning time of Malrehau. In a fairly quiet week-end, with the leading riders at the Air New Zealand grand prix final, the feature club race was Avon’s Round-the-Bays. S. Neill was the winner, leaving his co-markers about Governors Bay and winning by nearly smln. P. L. PavieU won fastest time by outsprintiiig G. B. Sword and A. J. Howlson, and added to his family’s success. His brother, Tony, won last year’s race. SURPRISE WINNER Papanui held a three-stage race in two grades, and K. J. J. Grogan was a surprising winner of the A grade. His time-trial win, in which J. P. S. Mullan was weU down, helped him beat the latter by one point. P. A. Wereta broke away in the final stage of the B grade. D. J. Taylor won the Avon novice club’s junior time-trial championship by the very narrow margin of o.Bsec from P. H. Taylor. The senior championship Kivided an upset when P. E. nnelly beat L. A. Sword by just over two seconds. Another member of the previous day’s successful junior team, Bruee, won Kalapol’s 10mlle handicap race; while his older brother, Tony, and S. P. White dead-heated for fastest time.
