11 waggons derailed
A goods train was derailed early yesterday on the main line from Christchurch to Picton. No-one was injured but traffic was disrupted and the line was not expected to be open until about 3 a.m. today. Eleven waggons loaded with general freight left the rails in a cutting north of Hundalee, 24 miles south of Kaikoura, and some track was damaged. The derailment occurred at 6.05 a.m. and the train was the last freight north during the morning.
Passengers from two railcars—one north from Christchurch and one south from Picton—were transported by bus between Parnassus and Kaikoura.
Freight for today’s sailings of the Cook Strait ferries was expected to get to Picton on time once the damage to the rails had been repaired.
A mobile crane was sent from Christchurch to lift the waggons back to the rails and crews were called from Kaikoura to repair the tracks.
