Bangladesh appeal

The Bangladesh Youth Appeal in Christchurch hopes to raise $5OOO in a street appeal in the city and suburbs on Friday. The appeal was begun recently with an eight-day fast on the banks of the River Avon, when $5OO was raised.

The appeal organiser (Mr C. McGrath) said yesterday that about 600 collectors would be needed for the street appeal, which was proposed by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Pickering). Collectors were asked to get in touch with C.0.R.5.0. headquarters. The support of the University of Canterbury students to an appeal for money to aid education in Bangladesh was praised yesterday by the chaplain at the University of Canterbury (the Rev. J. A. Elvidge). "Their effort in raising nearly $l6OO was magnificent. Perhaps people should pause and note this type of student support,” Mr Elvidge, who is chairman of the World University Service’s Bangladesh appeal in Canterbury, said.
