Radiation readings
A very slight increase in background radiation has been recorded at three stations in the Pacific network of monitoring stations set up to measure results from French bomb tests at Mururoa. Nothing has been recorded at other stations and the increase—which in no way constitutes a danger to health —might be a natural one. The samples which showed the increases were taken at Tonga, Suva and Auckland last Tuesday, and measured at the National Radiation Laboratory in Christchurch. The director of the laboratory (Mr H. J. Yeabsley) said last evening that samples taken at the three stations from July 15 to 19 “gave some indication in air samples of a very slight increase, commensurate with a very, very low-yield bomb test
"There has been no clear indication of an increase from samples taken at Wellington and certainly no indication from the South island,” said Mr Yeabsley.
