Badminton title to Lincoln College

Knox, the bottom team, came close to beating the championship runner-up, Mairehau, when the final round of the Canterbury A grade inter-club badminton competition was played on Saturday. Lincoln College had an easy win over Canterbury II and so confirmed its position as the A grade winner for the second successive year. Lincoln College went through the competition undefeated. Knox, strengthened by I. Kirkland, a Southland division one player, provided the main interest of the day with the stiff opposition it gave Mairehau, which was without its top player, P. V Boatwood. Knox was superior in the men and Mairehau in the women and Knox lost its chance of victory when it failed to win the men’s doubles after it had taken the first game. A change of tactics by the Mairehau pair, E. Ogier and B. Croft, forced the Knox combination of Kirkland and W. Edgecumbe into errors. Knox won both the mixed doubles in straight games to make the match score 4-4, but Mairehau had an advantage of one game. Miss L. Tucker (Canterbury II) showed a partial return to form by taking a game from the top Lincoln College woman and Canterbury champion, Miss J. Miles. Superiority in the mixed doubles carried Canterbury I to victory over University. University’s women players were stronger, but it was outclassed In the men’s matches.
