RIGHT DATES CHOSEN
The New Zealand ploughing championships were held near Chertsey on Friday and Saturday in remarkably good weather, in contrast to the icy showers and mud that have occasionally been the lot of similar events.
Friday was dull but unseasonably mild, and Saturday brilliantly clear and sunny. Two men share some credit for the selection of the days. Three years ago bookings were made for the new Ashburton Hotel, at that time still unbuilt, for accommodation for the event for about this time of the year. About two years ago Mr D. J. Stewart, then president of the Rakaia Ploughing Match Association, received a telephone call asking for the reservations to be confirmed for last week or the week before. An early decision was needed, and Mr Stewart got in touch with Mr H. A. Magson, who lives in the district and is a member of the executive of the New Zealand Ploughing Association. The booking for last week was confirmed.
Mr Stewart was a happy man at the week-end.
