Cross, now of Canterbury, won the men’s singles title In the Rothmans South Island table tennis championships at his first attempt, beating Ling Nan Ming, also of Canterbury, in a hard fought final in Dunedin at the week-end. Cross, playing a defensive role, made spectacular recoveries from Ming’s crashing drives. At two games each, the battle was even until the deciding fifth Sime. With Cross leading, 13-10, ing had muscular trouble with his leg. In pain, he completed the match, but managed to win only two more points. Cross won the vital game, 21-13. Ming later withdrew from the mixed doubles final, leaving M. Duffy and Miss Y. Fogarty (Otago) to win by a walk-over. Miss Fogarty showed the profits of a week with the touring Chinese by producing close to her peak form. She won three titles, including the women’s singles, beating Mrs T.
